This is giving the audience a forewarning of the menacing man on screen, although they may not be aware of it at the time. The man bounces up and down to the music, as the camera focuses on his large, eerie eyes. It’s obvious when the country twang song of Foul Owl on the Prowl rings out as the creepy, oily haired villain takes the stage. Music is utilized quite deliberately in this film. This sets the stage for the entire movie and the way music, imagery and symbolism are used as integral parts of this motion picture. As the train descends toward the bottom of the screen, the title theme song plays slowly, and the baritone vocalist sings in the background. Tibbs, a black policeman, could be seen in 1967 as a beacon, lighting the way through the darkness of this small, backward town in Mississippi. In the first scene of In the Heat of the Night, a train’s headlight pierces the night as if a symbolic gesture signifying Virgil Tibbs’ arrival.
